The drill sergeant still looms large
Before I knew I had pneumonia, I had recorded a podcast--even though it was a little hard to breathe. The irony is that the podcast is about how my drill sergeant tells me I have to be productive at all costs.
How comparison hurts you
While thoughts and feelings about comparison are inevitable, it's helpful to see how comparisons get processed by Anxiety, the Drill Sergeant, and the Inner Critic.
Saying no is self-care
Because masking, A.K.A. faking or fawning, is a neurospicy characteristic, and masking leads to meltdowns and crashing and burning, it's important to learn how to say no. Even though it will be agonizingly painful and against your nature to do so. It is important that you save your precious psychological energy.
Meet Binita
Binita and I are on a similar path: we strive to go beyond thriving to flying by giving to the maximum of our heart's capacity to love, wherever that limit is. Her goal is to write a book on spirituality that will pave the way toward a spiritual wellness center. This is an effort to give back--an act of gratitude for all that she has been given, and all she has accomplished as a result.
3 Reasons to Watch K-Pop Demon Hunters
I only watched the beginning and the end of the Oscars, and in that small viewing window, K-Pop Demon Hunters won Best Animated Film and Best Score. Which is fitting. The movie is deeper than it sounds. Sure, it's silly and there's plenty of fluff. But in addition to catchy tunes, it also has a powerful message that relates to all of us. Here are 3 reasons why you may want to check the movie out.
Look who’s talking
After naming and validating your feelings, the next step is to examine the thoughts going through your head. In order for a thought to be compassionate, it must be true and kind. Thoughts that are not compassionate are usually unhelpful. They may get us through the day, but not happily so. We all have voices in our head. This does not make you schizophrenic or have multiple personality disorder. Three voices to look out for when you are feeling overwhelmed are: 1) Anxiety, 2) the Drill Sergeant, and 3) the Inner Critic.
The two resources you may be undervaluing
Most people understand the value of money, whether or not that results in treating it as a valuable resource. The amount of our salary, whether we get raises, bonuses, and…
How to increase your mental bandwidth
Several years ago, prior to my move to Knoxville, I had reached the limit of my mental bandwidth. In a previous post on psychological energy conservation, I had talked about…
Fear of feeling
It takes practice, naming and acknowledging your feelings. Most of us don't have a strong feeling vocabulary. It can help to have a list of feelings, which you can easily find on the internet. Better yet, this is what therapists do best: help you articulate what you're feeling so that you can finally let the feelings go.Because ironically, preventing yourself from feeling is what makes you stuck. And feeling your feelings is what will set you free. And I want you to be free.
